This War the May Povl is a design inspired by the Castle Bytham May Pole of 1660. This Maypole was removed to and used to make a ladder for use in the church tower when it was replaced. Those who made the ladder carved one leg with the inscription used in the design. The ladder still exists in the Castle Bytham church tower.
This was first produced for a commission from Nottingham Contemporary in partnership with E-flux – the design was reproduced as a back cover on a limited run of the August 2012 edition of E-flux Journal. It was also printed as a risoprint as part of the One Thoresby Street Editions set as part of which it was taken to Wysing Arts Center’s Space Time festival 2012.
